Today we crossed the ANTARCTIC CIRCLE!!!!

It was very exciting.  Everyone was looking forward to it, we woke up this morning and immediately went to check the charts.  They have a large screen in the reception area where we can follow our progress.  It’s full of information and they have a map posted as well.

We  crossed about noon and the ships horns were blowing to commemorate the occasion.  We had a champagne toast to celebrate in the Discovery Lounge with the captain and the expedition leader.  Our gang was fortunate enough to get a nice photo of us toasting with the captain.

The crew members cleaned off the bow of the boat, as it was snowing and the entire population of the boat, passengers and crew went out to have a photo taken.

It was a cold, dark day and too snowy, rainy, foggy to get off the boat.  So we had a day at sea. We can’t complain though because it has really been the only day so far like that.  I had a short nap in the morning.  In the afternoon we all got a little cabin fever at some point.

There was a lecture about ice by our glaciologist in the morning.  This guy is wonderful, a true storyteller!  In the afternoon there was another lecture by the historian about Scott this time.

I went up to the bridge today.  I took lots of photos & had my photo taken with the captain.  It was great – I think my nephews would have loved it.  It was neat to see all computers and equipment with different stats and information.  So great!  I loved all the maps though.  I do love maps.

We watched part V of Frozen Planet tonight.  During the night the sea became rough & our things that were not secure fell and rolled all over the room.  It’s a little bit of a mess right now.

“If Antarctica were music it would be Mozart. Art, and it would be Michelangelo. Literature, and it would be Shakespeare. And yet it is something even greater; the only place on earth that is still as it should be. May we never tame it. ”
