March 14th

Today has been the first really overcast day.   We are in the Lemaire Channel.

In Pleneau Bay this morning we went on another Zodiac cruise.  It was so much fun!  It was a little rainy near the end of the ride but other than that it was perfect.  We went through an area that is known as iceberg graveyard.  It was so beautiful!  I took so many photos.  I am just infatuated with the ice.  The shapes, sizes, colours; I can’t get enough of it, I just love it.

We saw lots of wildlife as well on the zodiac cruise.  There were leopard seals, crabeater seals and wendell seals.  Many penguins and even an Adelie penguin which we hadn’t seen yet.

Our afternoon program was cancelled today.  We were to take the zodiacs to Petermann Island but instead continued to head south. We encountered considerable ice and the captain decided to head a different direction. Our goal is to cross the Antarctic Circle.  It’s one of the reasons I chose this expedition or adventure so I am okay with that.  I would rather miss a landing then miss crossing the Antarctic Circle.  Very few people in the world have been to Antarctica and even fewer have crossed the Antarctic Circle.  I will be one of those people!

There are many, many pieces of ice floating in the water.  I love that the ice makes such a loud, crashing  noise when it hits the boat.  It’s a great sound.  You would be surprised at how loud it is.

There was a great lecture on Shackleton in the afternoon.  I’m going to have to read more about his adventures, I’m feeling a little uninformed.  The guide who gave the lecture is from Canada, near Lindsay actually.  He gave us a suggested reading  list so I may have to order some new books to add to my ever growing collection.  Twist my arm on that one I know….

Tonight the movie was Happy Feet!
